Why Social-Emotional Learning Should Be On Every Toddler's Schedule

Reaching developmental milestones in early childhood is crucial for laying a strong foundation for a child's future growth and learning. These milestones, which range from physical skills like crawling and walking to social skills like playing and communicating, are indicators of a child's brain development and overall health.

While early identification and intervention are crucial, many parents don't realize that the most critical window for development and support starts much earlier than they think.

    The Importance of Early Years

It's well-documented that the first three years of life are a significant period of brain growth, and early intervention can be particularly beneficial. Research consistently shows that the human brain grows significantly and rapidly during toddlerhood. By the time children reach five years old, approximately 90% of their brains have already developed. The early phase of rapid brain growth involves the formation of numerous neural connections—around one million every second—crucial for cognitive, social, and emotional development. During this stage of development, the brain undergoes significant growth and refinement, with neural connections being strengthened and pruned based on experiences, which enhances cognitive, motor, social, and language skills.

These connections are significantly shaped by a child's interactions with their environment and caregivers. Positive, nurturing experiences and responsive relationships with adults significantly influence the development of these connections, setting a foundation for future learning and behavior (First Things First) (Arizona PBS) (ZERO TO THREE).

This early developmental period is characterized by the brain's remarkable capacity for change, making early childhood a critical time for intervention and support to ensure optimal development. (First Things First) (ZERO TO THREE).

Challenges in Accessing Interventions for Development

Early intervention services play a critical role in supporting children who are at risk of developmental delays or who have already been identified as needing extra support. These services, which can include therapy, educational support, and family training, are tailored to meet each child's individual needs and are designed to address deficits in areas such as speech, motor skills, and cognitive functions. By intervening early, these programs help to maximize a child’s developmental potential, ensuring that delays do not become more pronounced and difficult to address as the child grows older. Furthermore, early intervention not only aids the child but also provides parents and caregivers with the tools and strategies they need to effectively support their child's development at home.

The challenges for parents, however, are substantial. Early intervention services can be costly and inaccessible, leaving many children without the support they need. Furthermore, most therapy services aren't even accessible without a formal diagnosis, further delaying crucial intervention. Unfortunately, the wait to receive a diagnosis is often a significant challenge. For example, although a reliable autism diagnosis can be made as early as 2 years of age, the average age of autism diagnosis in the U.S. is approximately 5 years old, with the first intervention typically starting around 4.7 years and as late as 7.6 years in some cases (Autism Speaks) (SARRC).

Early behavioral support and awareness are incredibly important to take full advantage of this developmental window. This is where technology can step in and bridge the gap.
